Regarding your son with the sleeping problem. Often many people snore and also have sleeping problems because they can't breathe through their nose, so they are forced to breathe through their mouth. The snoring is a result of the uvula vibrating against the tongue. Apnea can follow when the tissue in the throat area collapses and now that breathing passage is cut off. A common solution is the breathing machine which forces air though the nose, but is found to be very uncomfortable for most. A lot of people have had success with a simple device that clips on the septum and keeps the nasal pasages open by nerve stimulation. Take a look at www.breatheez.biz for more information.

I also am searching for a top sleep specialist. One of my cousins has severe sleep apnea. He is only 20. And after a night spent at a sleep clinic, it was determined that he gets very little REM sleep. It appears that his condition is one of CSA (central sleep apnea) rather than OSA (obstructive sleep apnea which is generally seen in older heavy set individuals). This appears to be a very limited field of study in medicine and other than some gimmicks or a mask little is being offered to the sufferers. It seems that the few doctors who do work in this field are associated with universities. Does anyone know a really top specialist(s) in this area? Thanks, CP

My son (18 yrs) has been diagnosed with severe sleep apnia. WE first did the sleep study-160 breathing stops during a 6 hr. study. They prescribed a breathing machine that causes him to get even less sleep. We next visited a throat Doctor thinking tonsils, he found a clear opening and forwarded us to a mouth surgeon who wants to cut his jaw and move it forward 10 mm ( 1/2 ")and move the top half to match! This will move his tongue away from his throat. Also note, he is 5'10" 140lbs, muscular without any other medical problems. I'd sure like an alternative if there's one out there. HELP!

I do not get proper sleep at night due to sleep apnia. I breathe from the mouth which causes dehydration & I have to drink a lot of water. It is also reported that I snore a lot which creates a lot of embarassment particularly when I am travelling in trains or sharing hotel rooms with collegues. Please advice & help

I've been experiencing some sort of problem with my breathing. I've noticed that when I'm thinking durring the day that I stop breathing and at night my husband says I stop breathing. I have high blood pressure and am being treated for panic attacks with a prescription anti-depressant. Most of the time I feel a bit weak and light-headed. Basically I feel strange and I know there must be something wrong. I wonder if anyone is experiencing something like this as well?
